Introductory Skills for Practice
 

 

'Greening Out: Supporting Young People Using Cannabis - Introductory Skills for Practice' introduces workers to foundational skills for understanding, assessing and responding to cannabis use in young people.

This 3 hour training program will:
- Provide an introductory overview of cannabis, its use and effects.
- Explore some of the reasons for cannabis use in young people.
- Build practical skills for the comprehensive assessment of cannabis use and other substance use in young people.
- Introduce brief interventions for cannabis use, for even the most inexperienced or non-clinical workers.
- Overview harm reduction strategies for cannabis use in young people.
 
Although the language used in 'Greening Out' is aimed at work with young people, the knowledge and skills developed in this training are highly transferable to adult populations.
 
Participants undertaking the 'Introductory Skills for Practice' training do not require any prior knowledge or skills to attend. Training is suitable for any worker who engages a young person who may be using cannabis.
 
Participants who successfully complete the 'Introductory Skills for Practice' training, or have prior knowledge and skills in Motivational Interviewing and assessment of substance use may opt to also complete the 'Advanced Skills for Practice' training. 
 
Learning Objectives:
At the end of training, participants will:
(1) Have an understanding of the drug Cannabis, its use and effects in young people.
(2) Understand some of the reasons why young people use cannabis.
(3) Understand the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for Cannabis Use Disorders, as well as the concepts of dependence, tolerance and withdrawal.
(4) Develop practical skills for the comprehensive assessment of cannabis use and other substance use in young people.
(5) Understand the 'Stages of Change' model and how to deliver a youth friendly, evidence-based brief intervention utilising a Motivational Interviewing approach.
(6) Identify and implement evidence based harm minimisation strategies for cannabis use in young people.
